Forest hounds are social creatures who co-exist in packs with a hierarchical order. For each pack there is always an 'alpha' who oversees the pack and is responsible for brinding new seeds to the family. Alpha forest hounds are usually bigger, fiercer and more cunning than the rest of the pack.

Oftentimes a daring member of the group or some ambitious passing-by hound may challenge the alpha for control of the pack. Whoever wins attains or continues its reign.
The fight itself is one to the death, though it is known of cases where one of the two will flee or resign combat. When one of the combatants is killed, the victorious will, for ritual purposes, devour the corpse of the rival.
Cannibalism in forest hound society occurs as well when different packs clash; the victorious pack is known to consume the dead of the opposing force although they allow the survivors to reintegrate into their's or do as they will.

tl;dr version: In plant dog society, if you got the guts challenge the top dog and die, top dog eats your guts. Cos it's cool like that.
